Friday Five and The Runners Choice Review!

Blogging fail!  Time has flown by and I haven’t posted in almost 2 weeks!  Here is what has been going on since we last chatted.

1.  I was given the opportunity to review “The Runner’s Choice” a couple months ago and am just now getting the chance to write about it.

“The Runner’s Choice – Foot Massage in a Bottle

The Runner’s Choice is for the discomfort of sore feet. It is designed for people who jog 3 miles or more at a time or for people who are on their feet all day. After you try this product for the first time, you will be back for more.”

“The Runner’s Choice is scientifically formulated with 100% natural botanical oils of almond, eucalyptus, eucalyptol, wintergreen, peppermint and spearmint. It is designed for people that run 3 miles or more at a time or for those that are on their feet all day.”

The Runner's Choice

When I first opened the bottle I was a bit worried because the smell was quite strong.  But once I put it on my feet the smell leveled out.  I have issues with PF and although the bottle doesn’t specifically say it helps with PF I feel like it definitely soothed my PF.

I started using it about a month ago after my longer runs.  I would shower and then rub it on my feet, then put socks on so that it didn’t get on the carpet;)  I actually enjoyed the minty smell and the oils seemed to relax and sooth my feet.  This reminds me of my Tommie Copper calf sleeves.  I don’t know how it works exactly but it does:)

I have been using it pretty much every time I run and my feet, although not completely ache free, feel pretty darn good!  I haven’t felt the need to ice them which is a good sign:)

The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that they use the word “jog” in their description;)  I really hate that word!  I guess I can look past that since it makes my feet feel better:)

  • For a limited time, the manufacturer is willing to offer my readers one FREE bottle ($19.95 value). 2.  I ran a 10 miler on Sunday and it went pretty well.  I am thinking about skipping the fueling for my race since I have been feeling pretty good without any fuel on my long runs lately.  The last time I ran the NODM I felt like the Sharkies contributed to my dehydration.  So, I am going to go without and concentrate on better hydration during the race.

5-24-15,

3.  There is a section on the side of my house that gets overrun by weeds.  I tackled it a couple days ago and found a few friends.  I swear the salamander looked at me like he was going to jump on me, but I know that it can’t move that fast.  It still creeped me out;)

salamander4.  I have gone 5 days now without caffeine and have had a headache pretty much every day!  Ugh!   I’m hoping I am  over the hump, so far so good today.

5.  I’m pretty sure Adrian got stung by a bee yesterday.  Her face swelled up pretty good but she didn’t seem to be bothered by it other than scratching a bit.  Lucky for her, I have a stockpile of almost every dog medicine imaginable, so I gave her one of Rocky’s allergy meds.  Yes, a vet would suggest otherwise.  But, the last time I took Rocky in for something similar (just to be safe), I spent $250 for them to give him pretty much the same meds we have at home:/  I’m happy to say that the swelling is down and she seems to be on the mend:)  If you want a chuckle, google “dog bee stings”.  There are some pretty funny pics in the top 2-3 rows, but don’t scroll down any further.  Weird things start popping up.

That’s all for now.  What has been happening with you lately?  Has your pet ever been stung?  Did you go to the vet or take care of it on your own?  Do you fuel for your half marathons?  Have you tried “The Runner’s Choice“?

Have a great day and happy running!

I was given a bottle of “The Runner’s Choice” for free for review from Trusted Health Products.  All opinions are my own.

Random Thoughts Tuesday

After yesterday’s post, I did a little more digging and realized that if I volunteer at this year’s race, I will have a guaranteed spot at the Light at the End of the Tunnel Marathon in 2015.  I will have just turned 40 by then and will be in a new age bracket.  Maybe this is the meant to be moment?  I’m hoping to find a pal to volunteer with me.  Anyone interested?

In preparation for the race that I do have on the calendar this year, I did 5 miles of speedwork on the treadmill yesterday.  It went well.  My ankle still feels a little weird.  Not painful at all, just a little achy.  I’m not sure what I did to it, but I am not too worried.

Speaking of my upcoming race, the North Olympic Discovery Half Marathon, the best race ever, I am running it on an awesome team raising money for childhood cancer research (specifically T-cell therapy) through Seattle Children’s Hospital.    I am having a candle/jewelry purse/cosmetics (Note: “Colton’s Army” at check out for cosmetics) party with a percentage of all proceeds going to cancer research.  So, if you are in the market for any of these products, you can click on the links provided and shop to your hearts content.  Just type in my name at checkout (Rachelle Quarders) and your purchase will go to a great cause!

This is a little random, but over the weekend my son was invited to a party and there was a dress code!  Is this how things work nowadays?  I don’t ever remember there being a dress code at a birthday party when I was younger.  But, maybe I just wasn’t invited to the right parties?  Thoughts?

Last but not least, I am linking up with Jen at “Running with the Girls” for Tulip Tunesday.  I have a couple of songs that I am loving right now.

tulip tunesdayThoughts on a dress code for a birthday party?  Any favorite songs you are into right now?

Have a great day and happy running!

It’s Tuesday

I seriously just sat here for 5 minutes trying to think of a clever title and this is what I decided on;)  Talent?

Today is amazing here in WA.  75 degrees, blue skies, birds singing, the scent of cherry blossoms in the air.  You can tell we haven’t had this kind of weather in many, many months.  When it comes around, it is the most amazing thing ever!

sunI had 2 clients this morning and I worked them both out at the park.  I love working out in the fresh warm air.  The nice weather actually started out yesterday so I took advantage of it.  My son had a 7pm baseball game at a local field.  So, I talked my friend into running to the game with me:)  Her son was on the opposing team, so she needed to get there somehow, might as well run right?  So, 6 miles of glorious running weather with my running buddy, and then a baseball game.  What could be better?  Well, maybe if my son’s team won, but I guess you can’t have it all;)

So, onto another topic, massages.  I really hate to spend money on massages unless I am training for something and I feel like a massage is going to help prevent injury.  The past week or so, my shoulders have been so tight and it feels like something is pinched or kinked?  Anyways, it’s not unbearable by any means, just annoying.  It actually is quite tender to the touch.  Just a little pressure between the shoulder blades hurts.  I know a good massage would feel so nice, but I really just don’t want to spend the money!  I would rather get a new outfit or something.

Do you feel like massages are pampering, or a necessity?  Do you get them regularly or just when injured or training for something?  What would you pick, a massage or a new outfit?

Have a great day and happy running!

I Give Up (For Now)

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with blogging?  I guess it depends on your reasons for doing it.  I set out to motivate others and give fitness and workout tips, but also to just write about real life.  Lately I have been feeling so stressed watching my page views drop off and comments decline.  I have been worrying about how to get the numbers back up and stressing about why people aren’t reading my blog as much etc.

I have decided to give up that stress and let it go.  I have been writing less, commenting on other blogs less, and some bloggers have stopped blogging.  I didn’t start this to get a ton of page views (although it was nice to see that more people were reading).  I started this as an outlet for myself and to help others.  So I am getting back to my roots:)  I am not in it to get free products but that is a nice perk too;)  I am here to build a community and to write about real life and trying to stay healthy at the same time.

A couple changes that I have made at the bottom of my page include “Workout of the Week” and “Product of the Month”.  I will post a workout that I created  every week for people to try.  I will also post a product that I love that will be there for a month.  These are not products that I get for free and are not paid advertisements.  These are just products that I have purchased and that I enjoy.

I also have a “What’s Hot” section that I will add to as I see fit.  Maybe I read a post/blog that is awesome or a workout/product or anything that is a hot topic in my mind;)  You never know it could be your post I put in there!

Prior to this I had given space to certain companies that I was an “ambassador” for and they may or may not have held up their end of the bargain, or I just didn’t believe in their product anymore.  No more of that!  I want my blog to be a place for people to find products and advice that they want and need, that they can trust.

So that’s the plan.  No more stress!  If you like my blog, read it, and even comment if you want.  If not, I hope you find other blogs that you enjoy:)

Have a great day and happy running!

Clean Eating and Exercise

Yesterday was a great start to my week!  I ate well and went along with Laura’s January Reset.  I can already say that I have noticed a big difference in how I feel as far as bloating.  The last few months I just felt bloated all the time no matter what time of day.  It was unpleasant and I was ready to make a change.  I am excited to continue with the process and see how much better I feel!

I also kept up with my exercise goals.  I ran 3 miles on the treadmill and then did a little 2.5 mile hike.  It was so nice to get out in nature and breathe the fresh crisp air!  I ended up with over 15,000 steps according to my Nike Fuel Band:)

meadowdale beachSo far so good!  I ended up putting on my knee brace yesterday for my run and hike since my knee has been feeling “weird”.  Not painful, just achy and loose if that makes any sense.  Not sure what is going on, but I am keeping a cautious eye on it.

I wanted to also post about this awesome documentary about Kevin Pearce, professional snowboarder who suffered a traumatic brain injury and how his life and family changed through the process.  I happened upon it on TV the other day on HBO and I couldn’t stop watching.  It was pretty amazing.  Here is a trailer.

It’s an amazing and heartwarming story.  I hope you get a chance to see it.  I DVR’d it so my boys can watch too:)

How did your Monday go?  Any big changes for you?

Have a great day and happy running!

Monday Motivation

Well, I have a lot to motivate me today.  My Dietbet challenge has started and the pot is up to $1025!  Laura’s January Reset challenge has started and I am ready to detox my body after those extra holiday treats.  The boys are back in school and it’s time to get the house in shape and my body and mind back in tip top form!

Although it was tough to get out of bed this morning after pretty much waking up whenever I wanted the past 2 weeks, I reluctantly rolled out at 6:25am.  Gone are the early wake-ups that I challenged myself to do last month.  I realized that I needed that extra half hour to stay sane;)

After my weigh in for Dietbet yesterday, I was pretty much on Cloud 9.  I was very nervous to step on the scale since I hadn’t weighed myself in months, and had a bad dream the other night that the weight on the scale was cringe worthy.  To my surprise, it wasn’t too bad which made me very happy!

I feel like I haven’t blogged in forever and I think this post is already a bit rambling so I will finish it off with some bullet points.

  • I am thrilled that my Dietbet has reached over $1000.  My last challenge was only $450!
  • The last 2 weeks having my husband and kids home has been amazing!  I enjoyed every last minute of it.
  • My last bootcamp class was awesome and I plan to use 2014 to grow my business and increase my class participation!
  • I found the most comfortable Lululemon sweats (dog runner pant) at the outlet and I wish I would have bought more.  Although I don’t think they had any more in my size:(  Now when I try to find them online, I’m not sure they make them anymore.  Sad!  Why is it that companies stop making my favorite things?!
  • On tap today is a short run on the tready (knee is feeling a bit weird) and a short 2.5 mile hike while the weather is still dry.  Can’t wait!

I won’t ramble anymore even though I have a lot more to say!  It’s good to be back on  a schedule and I hope you all are having a great start to the New Year!

What is motivating you today?  Starting anything new?  Did you have time off over the holidays?  Do anything fun?

Have a great day and happy running!

How to Create a New Habit

There has been something I wanted to do for years and I have been to tired/lazy/cozy in bed to actually do it.  I have talked about it, envied those that do it, and tried to talk myself into it often.  What you ask?

I want to get up early to get my workout in before my kids get up in the morning.  There I said it!  Yikes, now it’s out in the open for all to see.  I figured this will be a great way to stay accountable.  I mean, I am already tired in the morning as it is.  Why not get up another 30-40 minutes early?

get up earlyMy plan is to get up at 6am instead of 6:30 and get in 30 minutes of pilates or strength work every weekday morning.  After the boys leave for school, I will add in a run or other workout 3 days a week.

Previously I had a hard time talking myself into this because I wanted to run before the boys woke up.  In order to do that, for me anyways, I would have to wake up, drink my smoothie, go to the bathroom, then run.  That would mean getting up at least an hour earlier if not more.  That seemed so overwhelming to me.

As I was doing a pilates routine this morning I realized, hey I can do this for 30 minutes in the morning and I don’t have to worry about eating or jostling anything around.  This seems more manageable to me.  So here is my plan to create this new habit.

new habit

1.  Create a manageable goal.  Check.

*”I will wake up Monday through Friday at 6am for a 30 minute pilates/strength workout.

This new plan will begin November 18th and go through December 31st.”*

-Make sure you start out with a small goal, not too grandios!  You don’t want to sabotage your success right off the bat.

I chose a goal that seems large, but I know that if I make it every day (weekdays only) it will be better for my body’s sleeping rhythms.  My plan lasts until the end of the year and then I can reevaluate it.  I am hoping by then, my new habit will stick!

2.  Write down steps to execute goal. Check!

-Put out workout clothes the night before.

-Set out equipment needed for the planned workout.

-Set alarm for 30-40 minutes early.

-Get up (this is the hard part) 😉

3.  Find someone to hold you accountable.  I have you guys,  and I will make sure to let you know every day whether I succeed or not.  I will also let my husband know my plan as he will love the idea of getting me out of bed early;)  He has been suggesting this for years:/

4.  Don’t sweat it if you slip up.  Many people create goals and if they make a mistake, they give up.  You have to give yourself some wiggle room.  If you mess up, forgive yourself and move on.  Tomorrow is another day and another opportunity for success!

5.  Celebrate your successes.  When you do succeed, even a little bit, allow yourself to celebrate!  Be proud of your accomplishments.  When you reach a milestone, reward yourself.  A new outfit when you lose 5 lbs.  A new piece of workout gear when you complete your 10th workout.  A new pair of running shoes when you PR your next race.  Whatever will motivate you to complete your goal.

I plan to follow these steps.  I know I will not be perfect, I will slip up.  The bed will be warm and I will want to destroy my alarm clock.  But, I know in the end this is a goal that I really want to reach, and I am going to make it happen!  Who wants to come along for the ride?

Tell me, what goal or habit do you want to work towards?  Follow the steps and make it happen, we can do this together:)  6 weeks, ready, set, GO!

How To Enjoy a Stress Free Holiday and a Giveaway!

Speaking of stress-free, I just spent 30 minutes writing this post only to have it disappear right in front of my eyes!!  ARGH!  Okay here we go again;)

During the holiday season I kind of get freaked out thinking about the mountain of things that need to get done in the next couple of months.  Yikes!

I get hung up on doing everything myself and trying to make sure everything is done perfectly.  Well, this year is going to be different!  I’m not going to do it anymore!  So, here are some changes I am going to make to ensure my holidays are stress-free (or as close to stress free as possible).  Won’t you join me?:)

1.  Prioritize.  There are so many things that we make ourselves do during the holidays that are really quite unnecessary.  Let’s make a list of the things we try to get done every year that cause us stress and cut half of them out.  The holidays are about spending time with our loved ones.  Anything that takes you away from that should be let go.

2. Delegate.  Okay, so now we have our must-do list.  Take half of that and delegate.  I really need to work on this one.  I have 3 able bodied people in my house that are perfectly capable of helping out and I don’t utilize them.  I need to give up the control and be okay with letting others help.  I need to be okay with others doing things differently than I would, and be happy that they are taking some of my stress away to ensure I am a happy mommy/wife.

3.  Take care of yourself.  This can be done in many ways but here are some that will really help:)

-Exercise to take advantage of all those “feel good” hormones and endorphins we get when we get our sweat on.  Also this helps us not feel as guilty when we splurge on that extra bowl of stuffing;)

-Eat right.  Garbage in equals garbage out.  Make sure to fuel our bodies so that we have energy to get through the crazy business of the holiday season.

-Have “Me” time.  Is there anything better during a stressful time than treating ourselves to a massage or pedicure?  I think not!  Sometimes the thought of a pedicure on the horizon is the only think that gets me through the day;)  What’s better than a massage or pedicure you ask?  How about a deal on a massage or pedicure?!  All the pleasure without all the money:)  You can find some great SpaFinder coupon codes at Coupons.com for some awesome deals on spa services, hotels, resorts, and fitness classes.

4.  Relax.  After all is said and done, the holidays are about being with the people we love and care about.  How about we give them a relaxed and happy mommy/wife/friend instead of a frazzled and stressed one:)  The reality is, that all the little details that we always stress about are often unnoticed by everyone else anyways.

Now for the best part of this post!  You can enter to win your very own $100 SpaFinder E-Giftcard so that you can relax this holiday season! (US residents only please).  You can enter using the Rafflecopter form below.  Good luck everyone!

Golden TateAre you linking up for “A Day in the Life” too?  This is a pretty typical day minus the doc appt.  Not too exciting but it keeps me on my toes:)

Have a great day and happy running!
